The Origin

A Singular Vision

Friends of DELSUTH Foundation, FoDF, was born from a singular vision, one shaped by experience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to community health.

The Foundation is the brainchild of Professor Onome Ogueh, an acclaimed Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist whose professional journey spans both the United Kingdom, Canada and Nigeria.

In 2014, while practicing in the UK, Professor Ogueh felt a profound calling to contribute to the growth of the then-nascent Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) in Oghara, Delta State, Nigeria. He took a one-year sabbatical and returned home to serve at the hospital’s main campus.

During that year, he encountered both the promise and the challenges of building a modern healthcare institution in a resource-limited environment. He witnessed firsthand the struggles of women unable to access basic maternal and neonatal care due to inadequate equipment and facilities. He saw preventable tragedies that underscored the urgent need for stronger systems, better infrastructure, and broader community support.

Although he returned to the UK at the end of his sabbatical, his commitment to DELSUTH never waned.

In 2016, Professor Ogueh returned to Oghara to serve as the Chief Medical Director of DELSUTH, a position he held for eight years, becoming the longest-serving substantive CMD in the hospital’s history. During his tenure, he led significant institutional growth and transformation. Yet one reality remained clear: government effort alone could not shoulder the full burden of delivering sustainable, high-quality healthcare. Meaningful progress would require partnership, philanthropy, and the collective goodwill of individuals both at home and abroad.

It was this realization that gave shape to the idea of a foundation.

Drawing on his network of colleagues, friends, and supporters in Nigeria and across the diaspora, Professor Ogueh convened a coalition of like-minded individuals united by a shared commitment to advancing healthcare in Delta State.

From that shared vision, Friends of DELSUTH Foundation (FoDF) was established.
